Suitland's Revitalization Efforts
Suitland's organized revitalization efforts began in 1994. The primary focus from 1994-2000 was community organizing and mobilization of residents. This effort was lead by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Division of Neighborhood Revitalization.
The community representatives identified priority issues and concerns resulting in the production of the Suitland Revitalization Action Plan from 1994 - 1995. During the following five years (1995 - 2000), strategies were developed and implemented to achieve the activities outlined in the Action Plan.
In 2000, the Redevelopment Authority of Prince Georges County (RA) was established and M-NCPPC staff was re-assigned to the RA to focus on the redevelopment of Suitland Manor. This is the largest suburban renewal project ever undertaken by the County. These efforts have been joined by the Federal Government, which has appropriated $400 million to revitalize the Census Bureau and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association headquarters at the Suitland Federal Center.
After the M-NCPPC staff was reassigned to the RA, organizations in Suitland formally mobilized to launch an aggressive community mobilization plan. The Suitland Civic Association serves as the facilitator and coordinator of the activities, while active community organizations are assisting with the implementation of the Action Plan.
